Artproof Grant Finland 2021 has been awarded to Karl Henrik Edlund. As a part of the award, he gets an opportunity to show his work at Hippolyte Korjaamo in a solo exhibition.
The exhibition Eden is named after Edlund’s grandfather’s garden island in the Archipelago Sea, in Åland Islands, Finland. In the series, consisting of photographs taken over a course of sixteen years (2004-2019), Edlund approaches the question of how ambiguity relates to the notions of place.
The exhibition consists of colour and black-and-white photographs combined with a set of framed unique works of layered and paired prints, and process materials. By observing details and mapping the places that evoke multiple, contradictory emotions in him, Edlund has created a visual mind map as an extension of his wish for clarity.
The varied time frame presented in the exhibition is constructed by using clusters of images and collages, reflecting the logic of memory. The exhibition gives the viewer the idea of process and the uncertainty of the present. The images mediate a sense of the materials and feelings connected to the island of Eden. With close examination of the physicality of the prints and their pictorial content, it can be seen how time destroys materials and how a lived experience–such as personal sorrow and ordinary pleasures–remains elusive.
In 2021 Artproof Grant Finland is awarded for the fourth time to a young Finnish or Finland-based artist. The competition is organised in co-operation with Artproof OÜ and the Association of Photographic Artists.
