The concept of crisis is in crisis. Images of suffering just don’t move us anymore. Aids, famine, genocide – it’s all the same. So are crisis reporting and aid campaigns. Actually, they’re a bit like Disney films. They’re always about a fight between good and evil, and the two are easily distinguishable from one another. We can’t laugh at a crisis, we can’t have a decent conversation with it, and we can’t win a debate with it. Classic crisis journalism just fills us with guilt. We’re told about battles we’re not fighting in. And then we just end up feeling bad, nothing else.
11 photographers and 11 writers look at 11 crises and try to figure out how we should talk about them. The results are some pretty incredible journalism. Crisis? is the biggest digital photojournalistic publication in Finland. It’s published by photography collective 11, Kaskas Media, and eleven young Finnish writers. http://www.11media.fi/intro/
